Apprenticeships – learning and earning

Why work and study is the perfect match

As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2022, we hear why a combination of work and study is paying off for Cameron Morrison, who joined Rowlinson as a trainee construction professional.

Cameron is working on a number of active Rowlinson construction sites, gaining a wide range of experience across all activity.

Alongside this, he attends Salford University on day release studying for a BTEC HNC in Construction.

It’s important for people to understand that there’s a lot to offer in terms of construction.

Combining work and study is providing the perfect balance for Cameron, who is set to graduate later in the year and has aspirations to progress onto gaining a degree.

The 19-year-old from Hale explains why he followed this route, rather than full time work or study options: “Combining the two is the best of both worlds for me. Through the coursework, I’m getting a great introduction into construction and the built environment, with an insight into the professional and technical roles available across the industry.

“This is backed-up by working on site where I am constantly learning about different elements of the construction process, including the management and supervision side too.”

David Chilton, managing director, Rowlinson, says industry perceptions need to change: “It’s important for people to understand that there’s a lot to offer in terms of construction. The stereotypical image is outdated. There are a range of careers as well as a number of different routes into the industry, including apprenticeships.”

When it comes to advice to others thinking of an apprenticeship-based construction role, Cameron is clear: “It’s certainly worth giving it a go. Learning and earning gives you the knowledge and skills but some cash in the bank too. It’s definitely the right choice for me.”

Rowlinson has been recruiting and training apprentices in a range of construction roles for over 60 years.
