Apprentices get ahead on Crossings

Developing skills on flagship scheme

Three apprentices working for Peaks & Plains Housing Trust have been gaining vital hands-on experience on a local development.

Each spent a month at Crossings – a new build scheme bringing 67 stylish homes to Macclesfield on the site of the former derelict Georgian Mill. It is being built by Rowlinson for Peaks & Plains.

Harry, Callum and Jack have been working on a range of electrical installations, including both first and second fix systems.

Rowlinson has been supporting apprentices for over 60 years.

Callum Gater, 23, from Stoke-on-Trent said: ‘It was great to have the opportunity to work on the Crossings site. I have learnt lots of new skills from it. When complete, there will be over 1200 sockets in the homes, some of which I installed. The experience was invaluable and has benefited me greatly.’

Harry Butler, 19, from Whaley Bridge said: ‘My time on Crossings was a completely different environment to my usual work day. Everyone on site was extremely helpful which made the experience even more enjoyable.’

Jack Stanway-Layden, from Congleton said: ‘I loved my time working on Crossings. The knowledge I picked up is going to be invaluable in my future career as an electrician. I’m also very proud to have played a small part in this huge development for Peaks & Plains. It was a fantastic experience!’

Greg Statham, electrical manager at Peaks & Plains, said: “This was a great opportunity for our apprentices and we’re glad they were able to gain new experiences with Rowlinson and take part in one of our flagship developments.”

David Chilton, managing director at Rowlinson said; “As well as delivering the build itself, we’re always keen to do more where we can.

“Rowlinson has been supporting apprentices for over 60 years so it was a pleasure to have Harry, Callum and Jack on-site. Gaining first-hand experience from the team on a large construction site is a great way to learn and develop their skills.”

All the apprentices’ work was supervised and checked for quality and safety.

The development is due to complete autumn and will provide one, two and three bedroom homes with a range of ownership options including to rent, rent-to-buy and shared ownership.
