Academy of Living Well

Construction gets underway

We recently joined together with partners marking the start on site for the Academy of Living Well, which forms the first phase of a wider plan to transform Stockport’s derelict Grade II listed hospital into a new multi-generational community to be known as St Thomas’ Gardens.

Stockport Council acquired the former St Thomas’ Hospital site from Homes England to create an all-age residential scheme.

The development includes an exemplar 82-bed intermediate care scheme, the Academy of Living Well, one of Greater Manchester’s first intermediate care and dementia facilities.

The Academy is being constructed by Rowlinson and will provide vital support for people transitioning between hospital and home in an integrated approach to health and social care.

Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said: “We’re creating a space where people can live happy, healthy lives, connected with the people and places that matter to them. Stockport is the fastest-ageing borough in Greater Manchester, so building homes and neighbourhoods for all ages is a vital part of our One Stockport, One Future ambition and £1bn town centre transformation.”
